Understanding the calculators

This post provides a more detailed insight into how the calculators work and how best to utilise them.

The run pace calculator is used to calculate the time it will take to run a set distance from a selected pace. The sliders can be used to select the pace, and this is displayed simultaneously on the left of the calculator with the calculated race times displayed on the right.

Classic distances can be selected from the dropdown, and additional custom distances can also be selected. Custom distances can be entered in miles or km, and this can be used to calculate interval paces, for example working out a 400m time using pace and entering '0.4km' as a custom distance.

The Race Predictor calculates projected running time for a set distance based on a previous best over a different distance. A recent completed race distance can be selected from the dropdown, and a time can be entered below. The selection boxes can then be used to choose which race distance you wish to predict your time for.

The calculator uses an updated version of the Jack Daniels VDOT formula, which utilises predicted max effort to calculate run time. These calculations are intended to be used as a guide, as other factors including experience, weekly running mileage, environment and conditions will impact the actual time. The predictions are best used as a target, and to gain an understanding of which distances you may be able to improve your performance in.
